Voo Doo vs The Light

Just re-read last nights blog. Wow, talk about Captain Bring-Down. But that is the reality of it. Sometimes we just feel blah. Well…. I do anyway.

Last night we arrived at the clinic and we all just felt that something was off. Nobody could quite put their finger on it, but we were definitely in agreement that something was not quite right. But we went to work anyway.  Although we have slowed down in admission numbers, the patients seemed quite restless. At one point we decided to turn off one of our big stadium lights in an effort to create a calming environment. And it worked… for the most part.

As the people quieted and settled in we could hear what we thought was singing in the distance. Yet, this singing did not give us a sense of peace like it normally would. As the sound intensified we quickly learned that it was a VooDoo ceremony being performed just outside our clinic, in the bush area. Quickly we joined together and prayed that God would protect us and the people inside the clinic area, and asked that God would send away the witchcraft that was going on both on and off the grounds.

A few minutes later, the son of one of my patients who was sound asleep outside on a cot jumped up, cleared a good 3 feet, knocking over our makeshift wooden IV poles, a chair, and even 2 patients out of their beds. He was screaming and jumping and literally leaped his way out of the clinic. Well this caused quite a commotion for the people, they were all gathered around, some were angry, some were laughing, but they all agreed that was the result of Voo Doo. Ack!

I went to the security officer at the front entrance and told him that if that man returned please let me know. He was not allowed to enter back in because of the security risk to the patients but I certainly would like to speak with him. Sure enough about half hour later I was told the man was back.

I went to the gates and there he was, kneeling before us. He said he did not know what happened. He had no recollection of the event and was only aware that something was wrong when he woke up and found himself lost in the streets. He went on to say that the only way he knew to find his way back was to follow the light shining from our clinic. And he knelt before us with tears on his face asking that we share with him our light. Oh gladly. Let me introduce you to the Light of the world my friend. The one who will comfort you, sustain you, bring you peace and hope. The One whose name is higher than any other and more powerful than all the Voo Doo in all the world combined.

And so I prayed with that man right then and there, as the songs of the Voo Doo priests carried on in the distance. Last night he learned the true source of our light. I pray he will let his shine for all the world to see… or at least for those wicked witches and priests!
